It’s always kind of surprising how fast babies change in the beginning. I love when I’m able to shoot a birth and then return a week or two later for a newborn session (and then continue to watch a family grow for years). After photographing Ary’s birth last month, I came back to see her at a week and a half old to document her first bath. Having been born at home in the water, Ary didn’t have a bath right after birth. Babies are usually born with a substance called vernix on their skin. It offers a wide range of benefits so some families choose to rub it in instead of wash it off. Ary’s big sisters had been asking to wash her since she was born and were excited to finally be able to help. While the bath in the special baby tub didn’t last long, it was clear that Ary is a water baby. After she was cleaned, massaged, dried and dressed, the older girls went off to play, but only for a minute. Though the transition has been hard for them, the girls couldn’t stay away from their baby sister.
