And Suddenly They’re Six Months Old

Six month baby photos San Diego

Something funny has been happening this year. More than once, a family has reached out when their baby is around six months old and said some version of, “Okay, I think we actually do want photos.” Not because six months was always the plan. Usually it is because they looked up and realized their tiny newborn is suddenly a completely different baby.

The first few weeks (and then months) are kind of a blur. You’re tired, trying to figure out feeding, learning a whole new person, and probably operating on a level of sleep deprivation that should legally qualify you for something. Family photos can very easily become a thing you will deal with later…then later shows up.

By the time you can finally catch your breath, six months have already passed, your baby has changed in a hundred different ways. They have opinions, favorite toys, weird little habits, that one specific way they like to be held. They grab your face, your coffee, your glasses, and anything else within a three foot radius. They recognize you, light up for you, reach for you.

And the newborn you were so sure you would remember perfectly is already getting a little fuzzy around the edges. I think that’s when it hits people that they actually do want photographs. Not because six months is some official milestone you are supposed to document, but because suddenly there is evidence everywhere that this is all moving much faster than you thought it would. It’s when you try to remember how on earth they fit so perfectly on your chest and just… can’t.

This family’s session felt like such a good example of that. Their baby was right in that perfect stage of being completely woven into their everyday life. Sitting on the floor with toys. Getting passed back and forth between parents. Nursing on the couch. Hanging out in the high chair while everyone moved around the kitchen. Going for a walk through the neighborhood. Sitting at the coffee shop like she had been doing it her whole life.

The cool thing about realizing all of this and booking a session six months in is that you’re not just documenting how small they are. You get to document the life that has started to grow around them. It is the spot on the couch where you feed them. The toy they are always chewing on. The stroller you have pushed approximately nine million miles. The park you visit 5 days a week. The way your partner makes them laugh. The completely normal things that feel so ordinary right now that you cannot imagine forgetting them. Except you will forget some of them.

Not because you did anything wrong, there is just too much of it. You get this enormous amount of life with your kids, and your brain cannot possibly hang onto every single version of them. That is one of the biggest reasons I love photographing families this way. I am not only looking for a good picture of everyone together. I am looking for the little evidence of this particular stage, the stuff you are surrounded by every day and probably do not think twice about yet.

So if you meant to do newborn photos and did not, you did not miss your chance. If your baby is six months old, or nine months old, or somehow already a year old, there is still so much here. You do not need to wait for the next official milestone, either. Sometimes realizing you are already forgetting is reason enough.

And if your baby is still brand new and this is making you think, okay, maybe I actually do want photos before six months sneaks up on me, you can learn more about newborn sessions here.
