I love the holidays. I love that for most people it means spending extra time with family. I really wanted to do a family session this year to capture some unique traditions and the essence of the holidays for a family. Instead of photographing a family decorating their tree or baking cookies for Santa, I was invited over to photograph this extended family Christmas party. I can’t tell you how exciting this was. When I was still living in San Diego, I would go to my grandmother’s annual Christmas party that looked a lot like this one. Over the years, it’s gotten harder and harder to get everyone back for that party and I can only think about how amazing it would have been if we had pictures like these to look through.
It was really fun to see the afternoon unfold for this family. There were crafts and snacks, a few babies and a dog, handmade stockings and a fresh tree. There was lots of gift giving and yes, two of the grown ups got swords (practice swords, but swords nonetheless). After the living room was overflowing with torn wrapping paper, everyone sat down for Christmas dinner. When it was time for me to leave, there was a feeling of contentment that took over the whole house as the adults slipped into food comas and the kids played with their shiny, new toys. Happy Holidays!
